How to install Audacity on Mac OS X

The LAME library is not installed into /Library/Application Support/audacity/Plug-ins. It is installed into /Library/Application Support/audacity/libs. If you double-click the file 'Lame Library v3.99.5 for Audacity.pkg', it will install the LAME library into the correct location, and the next time you start Audacity it will find the library. In the DMG window, or using the menu item for the mounted DMG in the Finder sidebar, double-click 'Lame Library v3.99.5 for Audacity.pkg' to launch the standard Mac installer. If you receive a warning that the package cannot be opened, right-click or Ctrl-click the package, choose 'Open', then click 'Open'. In the DMG window, or using the menu item for the mounted DMG in the Finder sidebar, double-click 'Lame Library v3.99.5 for Audacity.pkg' to launch the standard Mac installer.

Audacity is a free, open source software for recording and editing sounds.

Install Audacity 1.3.12 (Beta), which is the latest release. Unless you really have a good reason to do so, do not choose to install the older stable version 1.2.6a, as this one does not have some of the new very useful features.

You probably will want mp3 support. Follow these instructions in order to be able to export mp3 files from Audacity:

To downloadand install Audacity (be sure to download version 1.3.14 - Beta):

  1. Download to a folder (or desktop) on your PC.
  2. Double-click.
  3. Follow the prompts.

  1. Double-click the downloaded .dmg to mount it.
  2. Then to install Audacity, copy the 'Audacity' folder from the newly mounted .dmg to /Applications or any other location of your choosing.

In additionyou will want to install the LAME MP3 Encoder (You need it to save files asMP3):

  1. Click on the link above.
  2. Save the file anywhere on your computer. Do notright-click the link to the .exe file.
  3. Double-click 'Lame v3.99.3 forWindows.exe' to launch it (you can safely ignore any warnings that the'publisher could not be verified').
  4. Follow the 'Setup' instructions to installLAME for Audacity. Do not change the offered destination location of'C:Program FilesLame for Audacity'.
  5. The first time you use the 'Export as MP3'command, Audacity will ask for the location of 'lame_enc.dll'.Navigate to 'C:Program FilesLame for Audacity', select'lame_enc.dll', then click 'Open' and 'OK'.
  6. If you prefer the Zip option for the LAME download,save the zip file to anywhere on your computer, extract'lame_enc.dll' to any location, then show Audacity where to find itas in Step 5 above.
